Ifo Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich
Information and Forschung (research): This is what the Ifo Institute has stood for since its foundation in January 1949. The institute is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany and at the same time the one most often quoted in the media.
The tasks of the Ifo Institute are divided into three large components: Services for researchers, business, government and the general public – especially the compilation, processing and the provision of economic data –, applied economic research, and policy consulting for the public and private sectors. It concentrates on the areas Business Cycle Analyses and Financial Markets, Public Sector, Social Policy and Labour Markets, Human Resources and Structural Change, Industry Branch Research, Environment, Regions, and Transportation, International Institutional Comparisons,and Business Surveys.
A co-operative agreement links the Ifo closely with the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich, and in 2002 it was officially proclaimed an “Institute at the University of Munich”. In the CESifo Group it co-operates closely with the Center for Economic Studies (CES) and CESifo GmbH. The Ifo Institute is a member of the Leibniz Association.
