D.A.S.
D.A.S., a company in the ERGO Insurance Group, was founded as a legal-expenses insurer in Berlin in 1928 and is meanwhile represented in 15 European countries. For almost two decades now, D.A.S. has also been successfully operating in composite insurance and thus brokers insurance policies for almost every eventuality, together with building society savings schemes and financial services. In the field of travel coverage for motorists, D.A.S. is the market leader among German insurers in the German Insurance Association.
Under the name of D.A.S. Deutscher Automobil Schutz AG, it was initially a service provider that offered insurance coverage to car owners only, to give them financial, technical and legal protection.
In 1941, the company’s seat of business was moved to Munich. After the end of the Second World War, the re-construction of German industry and the leap in motorisation in the Fifties led to the rapid advancement of D.A.S. to Europe’s largest legal-expenses insurer.
By extending legal-expenses insurance beyond the motoring sector, D.A.S. took an important step towards opening up the market further in 1954. The logical consequence was to rename the company D.A.S. Deutscher Automobil Schutz Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG (German Automobile Legal-Expenses and General Legal-Expenses Insurance Company).
D.A.S. also took the concept of legal-expenses insurance to other European countries at an early date. The first foreign subsidiary was formed in Austria in 1955 and was joined by companies in numerous other European countries during the decades that followed.
Since 1978, the travel coverage policy for motorists has been sold independently by the then newly formed D.A.S. Versicherungs-AG. In 1983, D.A.S. Versicherungs-AG was the first insurance company to set up a 24-hour service for its customers. With this pioneering step, it also brought momentum to the service concept in other sectors.
With introduction of motor insurance, D.A.S. Versicherungs-AG began development into a composite insurer.
