Since its foundation in 1933 the parent company HUK-COBURG which is at the top of the insurance group has been operating according to the principle of mutuality. The parent company holds all shares in HUK-COBURG Holding AG, under the roof of which the subsidiaries of HUK-COBURG insurance group are to be found. Three „Versicherer im Raum der Kirchen –VRK“ (insurers in the field of churches) are the special partners for staff members in church, deaconry, charity and free welfare work. The other companies are open to all interested individuals.

The HUK-COBURG Insurance Group offers a complete range of insurance and building savings products to private households. The parent company HUK-COBURG is a mutual insurance company and is open only to members of the public service. In addition the group consists of non-life companies HUK-COBURG-Allgemeine, HUK24, HUK-COBURG Legal-Protection, HUK-COBURG Life-Insurance, HUK-COBURG Health-Insurance, HUK-COBURG Building-savings and of three special insurance companies for the church-related sector. In 2008 the Group recorded a premium income of over 4.98 billion euros and engaged 8,757 employees. It ranks number two in motor-insurance, private liability and household–insurance in Germany.

Thus HUK-COBURG Versicherungsgruppe is among the major German insurers. In the car insurance sector it ranks second and in the motor bike insurance sector it even ranks first among insurers. The company is headquartered at Coburg in Upper Franconia. Throughout Germany HUK-COBURG has 38 branch and claims branch offices as well as over 400 customer service offices.
