Insurances – Among the leaders worldwide

Munich is the largest insurance market in Germany and one of the world's leading insurance locations. Around 70 insurance companies are based here, including the Allianz Group, one of the world's leading primary insurers. Munich Re, D.A.S. (Europe's leading provider of legal expenses insurance), Versicherungskammer Bayern (Germany's most important insurance group under public law), and Bayerische Versorgungskammer (Germany's largest group of public-sector pension funds) are also based in Munich.

In addition, numerous domestic and foreign insurers have their head offices in the city on the river Isar, including Swiss Re, one of the world's leading reinsurers. A total of around 33,000 employees work in the insurance industry in Munich and its surrounding communities alone – more than in any other German city. Throughout Bavaria, approximately 63,000 people work for insurance companies, including around 14,000 in the two other large Bavarian insurance locations of Nuremberg and Coburg. These cities are home to HUK-Coburg, one of the most important German vehicle insurers, ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG and the Nuernberger Insurance Group, which ranks second among occupational disability insurers, as well as other leading German insurance companies.
